BREATH: More than just to live...
We need to breathe. Point. Blank. There is no way around it, but is there more we can receive from this basic need to take us closer to where we are trying to go?
For bodywork, I always suggest deep, belly breaths while we work on tension areas. With these deep breaths, you are massaging your own nerves in the spine. Along with that, you alert the central nervous system that what is taking place is not an attack on the body, but something there to ease the pain and to say it's ok to let go.
Besides keeping us alive and relaxing our systems, what other benefits can we receive from this natural, readily available basic human need? With each purposeful breath, we don't only calm the painful tensions of the physical body, but we slowly start to bridge the gap between our body and our mind. With every conscious breath, you allow yourself to release some of the fog and invite clarity to make a home. With this clarity comes self truth, if you so choose to see it. When we are able to quiet the chatter of the mind, of the shoulds and should nots, we are able to tap into our genuine thoughts and feelings.
When you are able to settle in and use your breath intentionally, I have found that we are more able to sense the connection of physical pain to our anxieties and stress. Please understand that I know that for some ailments, breath alone will not be the only answer. But I do believe that with using conscious breath as an ally to the appropriate self care plan specific for your needs, you will only be that much closer to a more vibrant, pain-free life.
