SOFTNESS: To be gentle is to be strong.
We are in a society that applauds the 60-80 hour work week, sleepless nights and possibly the aggressive workout that makes you wanna vomit. I know this everyday hustle all too well. This hustle is what riddled me with anxiety and anger, extra weight and pain, and feellings of being constantly unsatisfied with my life. The thoughts 'Be stronger', 'go harder', 'suck it up', 'handle it', swam through my mind on a daily basis. What I should have been saying is 'it's ok', 'love yourself', 'feel those feelings', 'ask for help', 'slow down'.
The body responds to stress the same everytime. No matter if the stress is physical, emotional or mental. All the body understands is its under high alert. Whether you are being chased by a bear or coming up on a tight deadline, your body just feels the rush of cortisol and adrenaline aka stress.
So lets try something different. Instead of beating ourselves up in the gym or staying up all night to answer those emails, do something nuturing for yourself. Allow some gentleness into your life. We look at being gentle and soft as being weak, but I don't see it that way anymore. By allowing myself to be soft means I have the strength to let myself be vulnerable. I can be gentle yet strong and handle my business at the same time.
Ways to be more gentle and soften those harsh edges of our lives:
Take a walk, instead of the dreaded jog/run.....Go to a restorative yoga class instead of the vinyasa that strains your joints and tendons....Take a nap...Take a long bath filled with minerals and oils that melt your soul...Meet a kindred spirit for a herbal tea/topo chico and discuss whatever brings you joy in this world...Get bodywork/energy work. ;) (Shameless plug)
To allow yourself to soften and feel that gentleness can be you being powerful. To be a person that knows that nurturing yourself in times of high stress will carry you through to the more effortless times. Your mind and body will thank you. We have the choice to what life we live and how we want to live it.
